The use of land for residential purposes, use of groundwater in the vicinity of Pioneer Building Supply for drinking water purposes, disturbance of the contaminated soil containment areas and activities that would compromise the integrity of the capped areas are prohibited. Top of Page Economic Activity at the SiteĪs of October 2022, EPA had data on 23 on-site businesses. A golf driving range has been constructed in the western buffer zone for the landfill. The land on top of the closed landfill is currently being used by the City of Tacoma for a waste transfer station, hazardous waste collection area, recycling station, city nursery and an ecological-friendly demonstration house. All drinking water for the surrounding area is currently being supplied by the City of Tacoma. Residents also use the western side of the South Tacoma Field for casual recreation such as biking, dog walking and flying model airplanes.īetween 19, the City of Tacoma operated a municipal landfill on approximately 210 acres in a section of Tacoma with an increasing amount of residential and commercial use. Several homes are in this area as well as immediately west of the Site. On the western edge of the Site, 18 acres are zoned for residential-commercial transitional use. An eastern portion of the Site is currently leased by Sound Transit for rail use. Tacoma City Light continues to use the northernmost end of the Site for a maintenance and repair facility. Businesses operating on the southern half of the South Tacoma Field include Pioneer Builders Supply, Amsted Industries and General Plastics and Industrial Properties, which leases warehouse, office and yard space to businesses. Most of the area is within the South Tacoma Manufacturing/Industrial Center. The South Tacoma Field is in an industrial/commercial area of town adjacent to a major railroad line. Western Moving and Storage and Sine Communications currently use the Well 12A area for storage and office space. ![]() The area is located upgradient of Well 12A, a water supply well for the City of Tacoma. Well 12A is in an area that once supported industrial activities but has converted to mainly commercial uses. Clean up activities were completed in the 1980s and 1990s. Each of the three areas of the Site - Well 12A, South Tacoma Field, and Tacoma Landfill – are in different neighborhoods.
